Once a year National School Lunch Week and National School Breakfast Week provide the opportunity for us to promote the benefits of eating school lunch/breakfast to students and their families.Studies show that children who eat breakfast score better on standardized tests, have fewer health issues, and behave better in class (School Nutrition Association). According to the 1999 California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey, “On average, children who ate school breakfast consumed over one serving more fruits and vegetables (4.3 vs. 3.0 servings; p<.001) and those eating school lunch had over one-half of a serving more (3.4 vs. 2.8 servings; p<.001) compared with children not receiving that school meal (California Department of Health Services and Public Health Institute).
During their respective weeks each year, National school lunch/breakfast weeks are promoted through themes provided by the School Nutrition Association. In October 2007, National School Lunch Week was celebrated through a school wide election for a favorite school lunch meal. Nationally, the most voted for school lunch meal was “Biff Burger.” For more information take a look at http://www.schoolnutrition.org.
