June Harvest of the Month, Peaches!
The goals of this program are to promote reading and to increase enjoyment and consumption of fruits and vegetables. In an effort to motivate students to make healthful choices, they have an opportunity to taste and explore the featured fruit or vegetable of the month during class and/or lunch. Each month participating teachers and librarians receive food-themed books in order to present stories to the students during their tasting adventure. Visit www.harvestofthemonth.com for more information.
Farmer of the Month
The Farmer of the Month is an informational newsletter about the farmers that supply the Harvest of the Month produce for students to taste each month. This newsletter is delivered to teachers enabling them to talk about the Farmer of the Month with their class as they enjoy the fruit or vegetable.
Our goal is to help students understand how their food travels from the farm to their finger tips. We strive to honor and celebrate local farmers to connect children with the people at the front line of our food supply. We hope that the students will encourage their families to take them to the farmers' market, seek out the Farmers of the Month, and purchase fruits and vegetables at the peak of their season.
This project demonstrates one way that SCNAC and the Network for a Healthy California--Children's Power Play! Campaign collaborate.
