For the second year in a row, school children have turned in their Halloween Candy so that it can be sent to the troops in Iraq. Last year, over 1000 pounds of sweets were collected from students participating in Treats for Trade. This year, more than one ton of Halloween candy (3,150 pounds) was donated by students participating in Treats for Trade from Gridley, Oroville, Chico, Thermalito, Paradise and Orland.
Halloween trick-or-treating is fun and exciting, but children need to recognize sweets as a sometimes food, and should not be consumed in large quantities. Consuming too much of the sweet stuff can lead to tooth decay and weight gain. Treats for Trade is a great alternative to overloading young bodies with empty calories and provides a unique opportunity for them to give back to their community.
Our goal is to motivate and empower California’s children to eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and to be physically active every day. We want students to know they can be the champion for change for their choices and they have the ability to take charge of their health. With 1 in 5 children in the United States overweight and the number overweight doubling over the past two decades, it is more important than ever to reinforce healthy eating and physical activity patterns.
